A Milestone for PKD Awareness in Mexico

A Milestone for PKD Awareness in Mexico

A powerful step forward led by the Fundación Mexicana para el Riñón Poliquístico A.C.

On 29 April 2026, an important and symbolic milestone was reached for the PKD community in Mexico. Under the leadership of Ana Patricia Vite Abdo, and in collaboration with Federal Congressman Sergio Mayer, Secretary of the Public Security Committee and Member of the Justice Committee, a formal legislative initiative was presented at the Chamber of Deputies to officially recognize 4 September as National Polycystic Kidney Disease Awareness Day.

This initiative represents far more than a proposed date on the calendar. It marks the beginning of a national movement to bring visibility to Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD), a condition that has remained largely invisible in Mexico for far too long.

A movement begins

For many years, PKD has not received the level of awareness, recognition, or support seen in other countries. Mexico is still at an earlier stage in this journey, but what matters most is that change has begun.

This initiative signals a growing commitment to raise awareness among the public and healthcare professionals, improve early diagnosis and patient support, advocate for better access to care and treatment, and give a stronger voice to patients and families.

Every movement starts with a first step, and this is a powerful one.

A deeply meaningful moment

The significance of this milestone is further strengthened by its timing. The initiative was presented on the same day as the anniversary of the Fundación Mexicana para el Riñón Poliquístico A.C., making it an especially meaningful achievement.

It reflects a lot of dedication, resilience, and advocacy by patients, families, and supporters who have worked tirelessly to bring PKD into the national spotlight.

A shared commitment to progress

As the legislative process in Mexico moves forward, PKD International stands firmly alongside its member organization, the Fundación Mexicana para el Riñón Poliquístico A.C.

We are committed to doing everything possible to support our colleagues and the PKD community in Mexico. By joining forces, we aim to ensure that this important initiative receives the visibility and recognition it deserves.

Together, we walk the path towards better care, improved access, and a higher quality of life for all people living with PKD—in Mexico and around the world.

Because kidney health for all must include every country, every patient, everywhere.
